"Julie Le is living proof that not all librarians are dowdy. The Brooklynite and library-science graduate student is a formidable presence with her cherry-red lips and vintage -50's attire. Le has also been making jewelry since grade school, and selling it since her teens. Each necklace in her latest venture, Crunchy Jewels, is comprised of segments of the broken vintage chains she's been collecting for years. No two are alike, and in a clever twist, Le includes long stretches of multiple clasps, designed not to be hidden behind the neck but to be shown of. 'The necklaces are a composite of different parts with different histories and provenance,' she says. 'Each one looks different as you turn it around your neck.' The variety of metals within each chain -- some precious, other easily tarnished -- is also intentional. 'It's like wearing in a pair of blue jeans,' Le says. 'They fade and mold to your own skin.' "
